BAE Systems Inc. has supported the U.S. Air Force (USAF) at Clear Air Force Station (AFS), Alaska, since 2006. As part of its ongoing operations and maintenance support efforts, BAE required a follow-up invasive species survey. This survey included the Clear Composite Area and Solid State Phased Array Radar (SSPARS).

Ahtna Global was subcontracted to perform the necessary survey and provide a comprehensive report of findings. Ahtna completed the work during the 2017 growing season, documenting invasive species as they were found. At the conclusion of the project, Ahtna provided a written report and area/point match.

Field work was conducted by a two-person team, mobilized out of Ahtna’s Anchorage and Fairbanks offices. A total of 57 survey plots were delineated and surveyed, encompassing approximately 76 acres.

Field survey methods employed a combination of transects, comprehensive areal assessments, and ocular estimation to determine non-native plant abundance and distribution.

All non-native plant species were documented and a written report of findings was provided. The report included an area/point map, collected volumes of each species, locations of controlled and monitored areas, comparative discussion of previous years’ findings, and future recommendations.
